This is a walking tour of Kalabaka, Greece. An evening walk through the town that sits directly beneath Meteora.
Almost everyone who comes here drives up to the monasteries and leaves the same afternoon. That is what tourists miss. After the buses go, the centre fills up, the tavernas and cafes spill onto the pavements, and the rocks glow above the rooftops in the last of the light.
This particular evening had two things running at once. It was Psychosabbaton, the Soul Saturday before Pentecost, one of the biggest weekends in the Greek Orthodox calendar. It was also the night of the Champions League final, PSG against Arsenal, and every screen in town was showing it.

This evening walk follows the streets of Greece‘s most dramatic base town, filmed on May 30, 2026 – the Saturday before Pentecost Sunday. The date gives the walk a specific character: Psychosabbaton, the Orthodox Soul Saturday, falling on the same evening as the UEFA Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal.
What This Walk Captures
Kalabaka on Psychosabbaton Evening
May 30 is Psychosabbaton – the Soul Saturday before Pentecost, one of the most significant days in the Orthodox calendar. On this day, communities across Greece hold memorial services for the departed, visiting cemeteries and lighting candles for those who have passed. It is a day that belongs simultaneously to mourning and to community.
The Pentecost weekend itself carries a festive energy in Greek towns. The Monday after Pentecost – Holy Spirit Day – is a national public holiday, which means the long weekend pulls people out and extends the evenings considerably. Kalabaka on May 30 sits at a specific intersection: solemn in the morning, increasingly warm and social by evening.
The Night of the Champions League Final
The 2026 UEFA Champions League final was played on May 30, kicking off at 19:00 local time in Budapest. PSG faced Arsenal in one of the most anticipated club finals in recent years. Arsenal scored first through Kai Havertz. PSG equalized with a penalty from Ousmane Dembele in the second half. The match finished 1-1 after extra time and went to penalties, with PSG winning 4-3. Gabriel missed the decisive kick for Arsenal. PSG retained the title, becoming back-to-back Champions League winners.
In Greece, a Champions League final is never background noise. Restaurants arrange screens and the match draws people off the streets. In the later portion of this walk, the match atmosphere is visible. It gives the video a layer that no other Kalabaka walking tour will have.
The Evening Character of Kalabaka
This walk was filmed in the evening – a time of day that Kalabaka handles differently from the morning rush of monastery visitors. The Meteora rock formations catch the last light above the rooftops. The pace of the town slows in a way that the daytime does not allow. For visitors planning to stay at least one night – which we strongly recommend – the evening is one of the best reasons to do so.
Late May evenings in this part of Greece run long. Sunset falls around 20:45, which means the walk was filmed in the warmest light of the day. The combination of Psychosabbaton, the long Pentecost weekend, and a Champions League final makes May 30, 2026 a specific evening in Kalabaka that is unlikely to repeat.
