In this walking tour we visit Thessaloniki, Greece – the country’s second city, filmed on a warm June evening with the sun going down over the Thermaic Gulf.
We start on Nea Paralia, the seafront promenade, in the middle of the Thessaloniki Book Festival. For 17 days every summer the waterfront becomes the largest open-air bookshop in Greece, with over 500 publishers setting up stands under the trees. From there we pass the bronze Alexander the Great on Bucephalus, ringed by eight Macedonian sarissas, and reach the White Tower with street performers working the crowd outside.
The walk continues along the old waterfront to Aristotelous Square, up the main street and back down again. By the time we return to the promenade the light is gone, the cafés and restaurants are full, and the city is properly awake. Thessaloniki does evenings better than almost anywhere in Greece.
