Discovering Thasos: The Emerald of the Aegean

Thasos is the northernmost island in the Aegean Sea, widely recognized for its lush green landscapes and dense pine forests. Unlike many other Greek islands, it retains a significant amount of its natural vegetation, earning it the nickname “The Emerald Island”.

How to Reach Thasos Island

Thasos does not have its own airport; travelers must fly into Kavala International Airport (KVA) on the mainland and then take a ferry.

Keramoti Port: This is the most popular route. Ferries run frequently throughout the day, and the crossing takes approximately 40 minutes. These ferries arrive at Limenas, the island’s capital.

Kavala Port: This route is longer, taking about 1.5 hours, and the ferries arrive at the port of Skala Prinos on the western side of the island.

On-Island Transport: Once you arrive, the island is well-connected by a ring road. Visitors can use the local bus service (KTEL), taxis, or rent a vehicle to navigate between major villages and beaches.

Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia)

Golden Beach is the largest beach on Thasos, stretching for approximately 2 to 3 kilometers along the eastern coast. It sits in a wide bay between the seaside resorts of Skala Panagia and Skala Potamia.

Environment: The beach is characterized by fine, golden sand that sparkles under the sunlight, which is why it is named “Chrysi Ammoudia” (Golden Sand).

Water Conditions: The sea is crystal clear and remains very shallow for about 50 meters from the shore, making it highly suitable for families with young children.

Backdrop: The entire bay is overlooked by Mount Ipsarion, the highest peak on Thasos, providing a dramatic contrast between the high mountains and the turquoise sea.

Famous Sights and Attractions

Beyond its coastlines, Thasos offers several significant historical and natural landmarks:

Giola: A natural rock-cut pool located near Astris. It is filled with seawater that is often warmer than the surrounding sea.

Ancient Aliki: This site features the ruins of an ancient settlement and two early Christian basilicas. It was once a major marble quarry, and you can still see massive ancient marble blocks submerged in the shallow water.

Archaeological Museum of Thasos: Located in Limenas, it houses artifacts dating from the Neolithic period to the Roman era, including the famous Kouros statue.

Monastery of Archangel Michael: This monastery is built on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Aegean and houses what is believed to be a part of the Holy Nail from the crucifixion of Christ.

A Brief History of Thasos
Thasos has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was once known as the “Athens of the North” due to its immense wealth and political influence.

Ancient Wealth: The island was famous for its gold mines and its high-quality white marble, which was exported across the Mediterranean.

Strategic Importance: Due to its location near the trade routes of Anatolia and central Greece, it was a target for major powers, including the Persians, Athenians, and Romans.

Marble Heritage: Thasian marble remains one of the island’s primary exports today, continuing a tradition that has lasted for over 2,500 years.
