This is a walking tour of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, on a quiet September afternoon. Bulgaria’s old capital feels completely different when the tour groups are gone.
We start on Georgi Rakovski Street, the old crafts street lined with small workshops and makers. At this hour you almost have the cobblestones to yourself.
From there the walk follows Stefan Stambolov Street, the city’s main street, onto Nezavisimost Boulevard. The name means Independence, and it fits: Bulgaria declared its independence right here in Veliko Tarnovo on 22 September 1908.
Look for the flower clock in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Mother Bulgaria monument. Then it’s down Vasil Levski Boulevard, past the Konstantin Kisimov Theatre and the Court House, to the Central Market, where locals do their fruit and vegetable shopping. This is the everyday Veliko Tarnovo most visitors never see.
