This is a 4K walking tour of Sandanski, Bulgaria’s warmest town, at the foot of the Pirin mountains just 20 km from the Greek border.
Sandanski is famous for its air. Low humidity, very few allergens and mild dry warmth bring people here to treat asthma and other lung conditions, many of them at the Interhotel Sandanski, where this walk begins.
From St. Vrach Park we follow Makedonia Street, the long tree-lined pedestrian street, past cafe terraces and fountains into the centre. Halfway, you pass the ruins of Parthicopolis, the Roman city hidden under the modern town, then reach Bulgaria Square with Hotel Spartak and the House of Culture.
On the way back, stop at the plane tree its sign puts at about 650 years old, then finish among the pines, river and swinging bridge of St. Vrach Park.
