This is a walking tour of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, through the quiet side streets of the old town. We leave the main boulevards behind and follow the small lanes that many visitors skip.
The heart of the walk is General Gurko Street, the oldest main street in town. Old houses sit stacked on top of each other above the Yantra River, with views across to the Asen Monument. General Gurko was welcomed here on 7 July 1877, after his Russian troops freed Tarnovo.
Along the way we pass the Church of Sts Constantine and Helena, built in 1872 by the master builder Kolyu Ficheto, and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos. As we leave the cathedral yard, watch for the quick view of Tsarevets and Trapezitsa.
The walk ends on Tsar Ivan Asen I Square, right at the entrance to Tsarevets Fortress.
